Unmasking Shame

Shame has a way of convincing us to hide—hide our pain, our truth, and even who we really are. In this episode, we’re exposing what shame really is, how it shows up in our lives, and why it keeps us stuck behind the mask. If you’ve been pretending you’re okay while struggling in silence, this is your invitation to get real, get free, and start healing.

The Mask Shame Makes Us Wear (And How Jesus Calls Us Out of Hiding)

Shame has a way of convincing us to hide—hide our pain, our truth, and even who we really are.

If you've been pretending you're okay while struggling in silence, this is your invitation to get real, get free, and start healing.

What Would You Think?

What would you think if I described a woman who lived like this?

She had an untraditional upbringing. An absent father. She married at twenty, divorced at twenty-six with a two-year-old, and swore she'd never date again—much less get remarried. Yet less than two years later, she married her best friend while still carrying the same emotional baggage she'd been carrying for years.

She started three different college programs and never finished one.

She was known as "the fixer." Whatever the problem was, she'd find a solution for everyone else—but never look inward and do the work on herself.

She walked away from a decade-long career without a backup plan.

She constantly compared herself to everyone around her.

She tried to appear like she had it all together.

She never showed real emotion.

She lived with the "I am woman, hear me roar" mentality while secretly struggling.

Bills piled up until foreclosure was on the horizon.

She brought her children to church because she thought that's what people expected.

She experienced the pain of infidelity and allowed it to completely shatter her.

She never felt like she was enough.

She constantly felt like she was failing.

She cried out to God but couldn't seem to hear His voice.

She felt abandoned.

Every single morning she put on a mask and pretended everything was picture perfect.

She hid behind her husband's career.

She hid behind her children's accomplishments.

Eventually, she hid from the world... and even from the people who loved her most.

Whew.

It's okay if you just read all of that and thought, "What a dumpster fire."

I'd probably agree.

But what if I told you...

She is me.

That was my life.

And maybe, if we're being honest, parts of that story sound a little like yours too.

Let's Have a Couch Conversation

Some of the biggest eye-opening moments in my life didn't happen on a stage.

They happened sitting on a girlfriend's couch—in sweatpants, with a messy bun, mascara running like it was trying to win a 5K, and a pillow in my lap.

Those were the moments when someone loved me enough to tell me the truth.

Sometimes that's exactly what we need.

So today...

Consider yourself sitting on my couch.

Go ahead and prepare your toes.

Because this might step on a few.

How Long Have You Been Pretending?

Let me ask you something...

How long have you been pretending you're okay?

Smiling in public while struggling in private?

Holding it together for everyone else while falling apart when you're alone?

Friend...

That's not strength.

That's survival.

A lot of us didn't actually heal.

We just became really good at hiding.

Shame and Guilt Are Not the Same

According to Webster, guilt is the state of having committed a legal or moral wrong.

Shame is different.

Shame is the painful belief that something is fundamentally wrong with you.

Guilt says:

"I did something wrong."

Shame says:

"I am something wrong."

It whispers:

You're too much.

You're not enough.

If people really knew you... they wouldn't stay.

So what do we do?

We build a mask.

What Are You Feeding Your Heart?

Proverbs 18:20-21 tells us that death and life are in the power of the tongue.

I need visuals to understand things, so here's mine.

Let's say someone goes all day without eating.

Then, for dinner...

Chocolate pie.

Okay, let's be honest.

I'm talking about myself.

I can get so focused on whatever I'm doing that I forget to eat...

But if there's chocolate pie?

Suddenly I remember I'm hungry.

Now yes... I also hide while eating it because my children have an unbelievable ability to detect desserts from three rooms away.

But after eating nothing but pie all day...

I feel awful.

Why?

Because I filled myself with something that was never meant to sustain me.

Our hearts work the same way.

If I constantly feed myself lies...

"I'm not enough."

"I'll never succeed."

"I'll always fail."

Then eventually those lies become the fruit my life produces.

For years I lived there.

The fruit was hopelessness.

Fear.

Comparison.

Death.

Friend...

What are you feeding your heart today?

The Mask Shame Creates

Shame is the birthplace of the mask.

It teaches us:

Be strong instead of real.

Be liked instead of honest.

Be perfect instead of authentic.

So we become who people expect...

Instead of who God created.

The truth is...

Faith was never meant to be filtered.

Neither were you.

Hiding Started in the Garden

Shame didn't begin with us.

It began in Eden.

After Adam and Eve sinned, the very first thing they did wasn't run toward God.

They hid.

Fear entered.

Shame entered.

Hiding became instinct.

Then God asked one of the most powerful questions in all of Scripture:

"Where are you?"

Not because He didn't know.

Because He was inviting them out of hiding.

Even after they sinned...

God clothed them.

He provided for them.

He pursued them.

He didn't walk away.

Friend...

God cannot heal what we refuse to reveal.

So what are you holding so tightly that you've refused to surrender it?

Maybe today is the day to finally lay it down.

What Mask Are You Wearing?

Maybe you're:

The Strong One

The Perfect One

The People Pleaser

The Silent One

The Independent One

The Church Girl

The "I'm Over It" Girl

Every mask is connected to a lie we've believed.

Until we identify the lie...

We'll keep living like it's the truth.

Replace the Lie

Maybe your lie is:

"I'm not enough."

"My past disqualifies me."

"I have to do everything myself."

"God is disappointed in me."

Here's the beautiful part...

God's truth is always louder than the lie.

You don't simply remove a lie.

You replace it.

Replace it with the truth that you are chosen.

Loved.

Seen.

Redeemed.

Called.

And never beyond God's reach.

Show Up Anyway

A friend once told me,

"If what we're feeling and living doesn't seem a little odd to this world, we're probably missing Jesus."

That has stayed with me.

These last several months I've experienced moment after moment where the Holy Spirit nudged me toward something uncomfortable.

Every excuse in me wanted to say no.

Fear wanted to win.

Comfort wanted to stay comfortable.

But every single time I finally surrendered and gave God my yes...

I watched Him move in ways I never imagined.

Sometimes that looked like ugly crying in the middle of a Take 5 Oil Change.

Yes...

That's my real life.

The truth is...

We have no idea what's waiting on the other side of our yes.

Ask Yourself These Questions

Where am I hiding?

What version of myself am I performing?

What am I afraid will happen if people see the real me?

What am I refusing to surrender to Jesus?

Because that's where healing begins.

You Are Not Too Far Gone

You are not too broken.

You are not too far gone.

You are not disqualified.

God isn't waiting for a perfect version of you.

He's waiting for the real you.

He has never looked for capability.

He has always looked for availability.

My Prayer For You

My prayer is that God opens the eyes of your heart.

That He reminds you how deeply loved you are.

That He gives you courage to lay down the mask you've carried for far too long.

That you stop hiding.

Stop pretending.

And start walking boldly in the purpose He created you for.

Because you were never meant to live half seen, half heard, or half you.

Take the mask off.

Don't pick it back up.

Live uncovered.

Live unashamed.

Live wholly unmasked.
